June Update

June 2019

I held the second of two community workshops on science and art at the Castle Community in downtown Rochester. This event was free and open to the public. I publicized the event on the website of our local ABC television news affiliate, and on Facebook. Four families came to the event, representing 12 persons. Both adults and children made their own fractal paintings, and subsequently photographed their works in the light boxes I made available. Again, some of their works will appear in my exhibition. Thanks to the SEMAC grant, I was able to cover the costs of materials, and space rental at the Castle Community.

Test #15

With my previous tests I had determined that my most favorable combination of film and coffee recipes was the combination of Fuji Neopan 100 film (either 35mm or 120 medium format), developed in brewed coffee from Fiddlehead Coffee’s Ethiopian beans. I shot up the last of the rolls of Fuiji Neopan film in May, having purchased them in October or so. As it turns out, in the intervening months, Fuji had discontinued the production of this film, so I could not order any more. This was a major disappointment! I ordered some Kodak 400TX instead, hoping to get results close to what I have recently enjoyed with the Fuji Neopan 100.

I wanted to add to my collection of images of familiar sights in Rochester, so I took some photos at a one-day Shakespeare Festival event held on the Peace Plaza in downtown Rochester. I also took a walk along the riverfront of the (mighty) Zumbro River where several public sculptures are located, and in Silver Lake Park, home of the only lake in Olmsted County, and a human-made lake at that. I had good silver development, but the film was slightly overdeveloped with a little too much silver, making my images a little monotone with less differentiation between light and dark than I hoped to see. In a few cases, I saw evidence of bromide drift on the negative.

July 14 Update

I’ve selected and edited the final images for the show, and they are off to the printer! I’ll be installing the show at the end of this month, and holding my opening reception on Friday, August 9th.

Here’s a peek at a last minute candidate for the show. Do you think it made the final cut?
