Mandalas

A mandala is a circular shape often having religious or spiritual symbolism or meaning. They have their longest history in the Hindu and Buddhist traditions, and a somewhat shorter history in the Christian religion.

I use mandalas to explore how colors and shapes can be woven into 8-, 10-, or 12-point radial symmetries. I’ll usually start with a photo that has a particular color scheme that I like, then manipulate it digitally to abstract it into the round images you see below. No two ever come out the same, which is partly why they fascinate me.
